How Can a Water Sediment Filter Improve Water Quality and Protect your Treatment Systems?

sediment sandA large majority of the contaminants that affect your home’s water quality are tiny and invisible to the human eye. Sediment, however, is one type of contaminant that is large enough to not only affect your health, but also clog up and damage your plumbing appliances. Today we’re going to talk about where sediment comes from and how a water sediment filter can be used to protect your health and your plumbing system!

What is sediment and how does it get in your water?

Sediment is a general term that describes the combination of un-dissolved particles in tap water. These particles can get into your water in a few different ways, most notably from soil runoff and leeching from public water pipes. Some of the most common sediment particles include sand, scale, calcium carbonate, rust, clay and organic matter.

What effects does sediment have on your water?

Sediment tends to increase the turbidity (cloudiness) of your water. In addition to making your water less desirable to drink, high turbidity levels have been linked to higher levels of viruses, parasites and some bacteria. When consumed, these microorganisms lead to symptoms like nausea, cramps, diarrhea and headaches.

A water sediment filter will remove sediment from your water

You can remove sediment from your water with a water sediment filter. Although there are some standalone water sediment filters available, they are more often used in conjunction with other treatment systems like reverse osmosis filters , activated carbon filters and water softeners.

Typically, the water sediment filter is used as a pre-filter before water goes through the rest of the filtration process. Not only does this remove sediment from the water you drink, but it also protects your water treatment systems from sediment damage and clogging. The Hague WaterMax and the Hague Reverse Osmosis Water Filter are two examples of filtration systems that utilize sediment pre-filters.
